Fresh coffee beans in Ahmedabad: what to buy, and how to keep them
Most coffee sold in Ahmedabad supermarkets has been roasted months before it reaches the shelf, and the bag will not tell you when. This is what fresh actually means, where our beans come from, and how to stop a good kilo going flat in a Bopal kitchen in May or a Thaltej flat in August.
What fresh means on a bag
Roasted coffee is at its best between about one and four weeks after the roast. The first few days it is still releasing carbon dioxide and tastes a little sharp; after a month or so the aromatics fade and the cup goes flat and papery. A bag printed only with a best-before date, usually a year out, is hiding the number that matters.
Our beans leave us no more than two weeks after roasting, and usually much sooner, because we buy on a fixed schedule from one export-only roaster rather than holding stock. Ask for the roast date when you order and we will tell you.
Where the beans come from
Everything we sell and pour is export-quality 100% Arabica from Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka, roasted medium-dark so it holds up under milk and still tastes of something black. There are two coffees. 100% Arabica is nutty, jaggery, citrus, the everyday bag for espresso, moka pot and French press. WBA 100% Arabica rests in ex-whisky oak barrels before roasting, which leaves dark chocolate, oak, a hint of whisky, caramel and zero alcohol; it is the one to brew cold.
Packs are 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg. 100% Arabica starts at ₹599 for 250 g and ₹2100 a kilo; WBA 100% Arabica is ₹999 and ₹3600. Prices exclude GST, and the kilo is always the best rate per gram.
Whole or ground
Whole, unless you have no grinder. Ground coffee exposes hundreds of times more surface to the air and loses most of its aroma within a day or two; whole beans keep for weeks. If you do need it ground, tell us how you brew (espresso, filter, French press or cold brew) and we grind to match; the charge is ₹150 a kilo, in proportion for smaller packs.
Keeping beans in Ahmedabad weather
The city gives beans two enemies in turn. In April and May the kitchen itself runs hot: keep the pack off the counter near the stove, away from the window, and never in a parked car. In the monsoon it is humidity that does the damage, so an airtight, opaque container, filled and closed straight after each use, matters more than anything else you can do.
Do not refrigerate. Each time the door opens the cold beans pull moisture out of the warm air, and they pick up the fridge's smells too. The freezer is only for an unopened, sealed pack you will not touch for a month or more; once it comes out, let it reach room temperature before opening and do not put it back.
How much to buy
A 250 g pack is roughly fourteen double espressos or sixteen to eighteen mugs of French press, which is two to three weeks for one person brewing daily. Buy that if it is just you. A kilo suits a household of coffee drinkers or a small office, and still finishes inside the freshness window if you are brewing a few cups a day.
